Alice-Miranda is a non-fiction story about a young girl who moves to New York with her parents and house keeper. Alice-Miranda is an incredibly smart and sensibly girl for her age. New York is a very busy and bustling city and she does not want to miss a bit of the city. Cecilia and Hugh Highton, Alice-Miranda’s parents, are opening a department store, called "Hightons", in a few weeks and everything is going curiously wrong. On top of all of this Alice-Miranda is attending Miss Kimels School for girls and wanting to see all of the sights. Alice-Miranda faces many challenges along the way but somehow she seems to cope with all of this.
The main character in this story is Alice-Miranda Highton, who manages to charm people and make them feel happy with her outgoing personality. She can cope with any sort of situation whether it's things going wrong in a department store or finding out the mystery of the great old family feud. Alice-Miranda is the kind of girl who take things in her stride and loves a bit of mystery. Alice-Miranda values her parents the most, she loves them dearly and really wants them to finish "Hightons" and be happy and proud with it. In this book you get a sense that all of the characters in the story are stressed and worried about something.
This book is a story of mystery and crime. The Hightons and the Finkelstiens have a long going rivalry and it is not long before strange things start to happen at "Hightons" , tradesmen are not showing up deliveries and not being delivered, and things are getting out of hand Alice-Miranda sets out to discover the reasons of the historic family feud. In this story Hugh, Alice-Miranda’s dad, is having flashbacks about his great grandpa and is also constantly thinking about the family feud and who could be trying to destroy Hightons.
This book made me think about quite a few things such as why would somebody want to destroy "Hightons", and how Alice-Miranda copes with all the mayhem that is going on. The book made me curious about the relationship with Hugh Highton and Morrie Finkelstien, (the family's arch rival), I thought that the reason they hate each other would have to be a good reason. The characters in the book handle the situation about the department store really well, but Morrie loves that "Hightons "is all going wrong and plots more plans to make it go off with a bang!!
I really enjoyed Alice-Miranda, it is a book of excitement and you would never know how the end is going to turn out. Jacqueline Harvey gives out some hints along the way, but you can still never guess what is going to happen. The most interesting part of the book for me was the end where everything starts to evolve and one find out all of the mysteries. The ending is happy, but leads you onto the next book which leaves you guessing about what’s going to happen next. Jacqueline Harvey writes in a way that makes you believe in the story and leaves you wanting to read more. Jacqueline starts of the story really well and gives you all of the information that you need to know for the story. Even if you haven’t read the stories before this one, she refreshes you so you know everything that you need to know.
